Russian president dissolves government - [Mission 2008]

Russian President Vladimir Putin has dissolved the government at the request of Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov. Putin has nominated Viktor Zubkov, the head of the Federal Financial Monitoring Service, as the country's new prime minister.

Fradkov told Putin he wants to give the President a free hand in decision-making including personnel appointments with the approach of major political events in Russia.
Putin confirmed the country is moving towards parliamentary elections that will be followed by presidential polls.
Putin said, "We must all think about how to structure the government so that it better suits the pre-election period and prepares the country for what will happen after the parliamentary and presidential elections in March 2008."
Putin thanked Fradkov for his work and asked him to stay in office until his successor has been approved by Russia's parliament. The State Duma is expected to gather for an urgent session next week.
Parliamentary elections are slated for early December and the presidential election is expected to be held next March.
Zubkov was born in 1941 and elected as Russia's first deputy Finance Minister. Since 2004, he has been chief of the country's anti-money laundering service.历史上的今天:
